Fish Sandwich

A long piece of breaded, deep-fried cod or whiting on a bun it's far too big for. Pittsburgh is a long way from any ocean, but decades of meatless Fridays and Lenten fish fries turned the oversized fish sandwich into one of its own. The Strip District fish markets and a Market Square tavern serve them all year.

Half fish market, half counter-service restaurant on Penn Avenue in the Strip, with a seafood freezer case full of things you won't find elsewhere in town. The sandwich board runs long, but the Pittsburgh order is the English Style Cod: hand-breaded cod with tartar sauce.

Fish Sandwich Grab a Sandwich

Widely called Pittsburgh's oldest bar and restaurant, on Market Square since 1870, where a big slab of fried cod hangs off both ends of a long bun made just for it. The breading is Mary Americus's recipe; her husband, "Silver Dollar Louie," ran the place from 1916 to 1970 and is the one who made the giant fish sandwiches famous.

Wholey's Fish Market – Strip District

The big Penn Avenue fish market in the Strip. Wholey's started out in 1912 as a poultry and meat shop in McKees Rocks; these days it's all about seafood. Order the Wholey Whaler, fried whiting on a bun it doesn't come close to fitting.
