Central Grocery & Deli – French Quarter
Signature Sandwich
The original muffuletta
About
The Sicilian grocery on Decatur Street where Salvatore Lupo created the muffuletta. It opened in 1906 and reopened in December 2024 after Hurricane Ida kept it shut for more than three years. Walk past the shelves of imported pasta and olive oil and order at the counter in the back.
The meats are sliced in house, the olive salad is the family's own, and the bread is baked locally by hand. The line looks long at lunch but moves fast. It's open every day from 9 to 5. If you can't get to the Quarter, Central Grocery ships muffulettas through Goldbelly, and several local grocers, Rouses among them, carry them too.
