Russ & Daughters – Houston Street
About
The Lower East Side appetizing shop Joel Russ opened in 1914 and later named for his three daughters; cousins Josh Russ Tupper and Niki Russ Federman run it now. Take a number at the door, then order the classic: lox and cream cheese on a bagel, with capers and red onion if you want them.
Amenities
There's nowhere to sit at the shop, so this is a to-go stop. If you want a table, the family's café is a few blocks away at 127 Orchard Street; it doesn't take reservations, and when there's a wait they take your number and text you. If plain lox feels too tame, the Super Heebster stacks whitefish and baked salmon salad with horseradish-dill cream cheese and wasabi tobiko. There's also a Russ & Daughters at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and you can call ahead to the Houston Street shop for pickup.
