Schwabl's – West Seneca

About

The old-school West Seneca dining room that calls itself the home of Buffalo's original roast beef on kummelweck, with a roadside history marker out front to back it up.

At Schwabl's the beef is carved by hand and piled on a kummelweck roll, the salt-and-caraway roll that gives beef on weck its name. The menu sends it out with German potato salad and a choice of coleslaw or pickled beets, which tells you what kind of place this is: a sit-down restaurant with a bar and servers, not a sandwich counter.

The quirk is out front. Just left of the entrance stands a "Hungry for History" roadside marker from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, which honors dishes with deep local roots; WBEN reported it was the first one in Western New York. The town historian made sure the marker says beef on weck was "believed" to be first served here in the late 1800s, because no primary record proves the date.

Sit down or call ahead for take-out. The restaurant's own hours page lists Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30 am to 7:30 pm, closed Sunday and Monday and on major holidays; it's worth calling before a long drive.
