Cocina 35 – Downtown

Signature Sandwich Torta ahogada

About

A daytime Mexican kitchen on Sixth Avenue downtown whose torta ahogada arrives with its tomato-chipotle broth in a cup on the side, so you decide how drowned it gets.

The torta here is the torta ahogada, listed with the lunch specials. At the downtown shop you pick the filling, cochinita pibil or carne asada, and it's built with house mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickled onions and avocado. The tomato-chipotle broth comes separately with sour cream and pickled jalapeños: pour it over or dunk as you go.

This is a breakfast-and-lunch place, not a dinner spot. Cocina 35's own site lists downtown weekday hours of 8 am to 2 pm; its weekend hours differ between the site and its online ordering page, so check before a Saturday or Sunday visit. You can order ahead online for pickup, and torta trays are on the catering menu. The group also runs counters in Otay Mesa and Barrio Logan (to go only) and brunch restaurants at Liberty Station and in Coronado.
